Is black the new cream?

With a shortage of rams horn this year I had very few cream crooks or market sticks, in fact I just have one cream rams horn market stick left.

However, I have a few Buffalo horn crooks which are beautiful looking sticks and perfect for working in the fields, on your peg or going for a country stroll.

All sticks are made from natural products and will show slight imperfections adding to their charm and individuality. Wood and horn can easily be waxed or buffed up to keep a good shine if that’s what you wish or they will take on a lovely patina from just using them. These are all varnished to protect them but I find a little wax or polish will keep them in tip top condition. 

All sticks can be shortened and once sold will be fitted with a brass ferrule before shipping. UK postage and packaging is £20 and Europe £50 – I do not send to USA or Australia

I have four splendid wooden crooks here all ready to head out the workshop for a lovely autumnal walk.

All sticks are made from wood and will show slight imperfections adding to their charm and individuality. Generally I’d not recommend wooden crooks as working crooks as the crook will inevitably snap if wrestling a sheep, however 3 of these are laminated so will be stronger and should take a bit more punishment – if you dare!

First up we have this beautiful crook with Beech outers and Purple Heart wood in the centre. All glued up in a gig as a three ply laminate left to dry before the shape of the crook is cut out, filed and sanded into shape.

Measuring approx 51.5″ to the top it is a nice looking and strong crook with hazel shank looking for fun in the countryside – £90

Next up we have a lovely looking Lacewood crook on hazel shank measuring approx 52″ to the v. A bit less jazzy than the others listed but a great looking crook which feels great in the hand. Perfect for a trip to the pub once they reopen! £85 SOLD LL

My personal favourite this beautiful laminated Beech and Purple Heart shepherds crook with hazel shank is truly beautiful. Strong, stocky and attractive it has everything going for it. It measures approx 51.5″ in length on a chunky chocolatey hazel shank. A real corker for just £95

Finally and possibly the showstopper to some people is this very attractive and useful beauty!

Ram Oct A

First up we have this beautiful crook with lovely reddish brown shank and nice bit of horn. At just under 52″ in length its good looking dependable strong crook for just £165.00 SOLD BB

Second up we have this little character filled crook, smaller than the others with plenty of blushing on the horn (from where the ram has been scrapping!). Measuring  approximately 52″ is a perfect companion to work with on the farm or take for a walk. A bargain at £150.00! RESERVED MD

Last up we have this stunner measuring approx 53.5″ in length, it has a hidden bit of interest of a black streak on the inside on the nose to around the arch of the handle (tricky to see in a profile pic but you can just about make it out if you zoom in a bit!) .

Red deer antler thumb sticks now available! Everyone seems to love an antler thumb stick!

I have a lovely selection of antler thumb sticks available this year – antler thumb sticks are very popular as they are hard wearing, forgiving, nice and tactile to hold and look pretty attractive too!  The antler comes from the red deer when the deers shed their antlers at the end of the winter in the Highlands of Scotland.

All sticks can be shortened at no extra cost before fitting a brass ferrule.

The top 3 (A, B and C) are available linseed oiled and the bottom 3 (D, E and F) are varnished with 3 coats of yacht varnish. I will be applying more oil to these top three so will be a bit shinier if you order one.

It’s that time of the year again when I have a few crooks and other sticks to sell. These sticks are hand made using the finest Welsh mountain ram horn and quality seasoned hazel shanks. These are some of the best I have seen in terms of the quality of the horn and the lovely mottled shanks that feature on so many of them.

As with any natural product some may show natural imperfections in the horn or wood but just add to the unique charm of these beautiful crooks. The red areas present in the horn on some of the crooks is called blushing and a sign of a ram that enjoyed a good fight!

Rams Horn Nov Crook I – As I pick these up to write a desription I can see merits in each and every crook. They really are such lovely things to hold and use. I’ve had a crook for several years and still love to pick it up out of the stick rack in the hall and take it out on walks. They age beautifully and looked after well will last a lifetime. I digress …. This wonderful crook has a darker hazel shank, more chocolate than some of the others which gives lovely contrast to the cream rams horn handle. It’s that time of the year again when I get an influx of enquiries for stick and crooks for Christmas. Well, I’m pleased to say I have a great selection of crooks in rams horn, buffalo horn and lovely burr wood here for sale. As always each crooks has its own description beneath it. All sticks can be shortened if needed and will come with a brass ferrule fitted. These are natural products so will have natural imperfections. All crooks are extremely strong and the horn ones are suitable to work with. Personally I feel the wooden ones are too weak for catching sheep with and more suitable for leisurely countryside pursuits.
